Best Day to Post on YouTube? We Analyzed 2,624 Uploads

We analyzed 2,624 YouTube uploads across 59 channels. Saturday had the highest breakout rate at 15.7%, while Wednesday was lowest at 6.5%.

What is the best day to post on YouTube?

Search for the answer and you will find everything from Sunday morning to Friday afternoon to the claim that posting day barely matters at all.

Even large studies disagree on the exact winner.

A 2026 vidIQ analysis of more than 40 million U.S. long-form uploads found Sunday strongest overall, Saturday second, and Wednesday weakest.

Buffer's 2026 study of 1.8 million YouTube videos also ranked Sunday highest for long-form, but found an entirely different pattern for Shorts, where Friday performed best.

YouTube itself gives the most important warning: publish time is not known to affect a video's long-term performance, although publishing while your audience is active can help early viewership.

So we tested a different question.

Not:

Which day gets the most raw views?

But:

Are videos published on certain days more likely to break out relative to the channel that posted them?

We analyzed 2,624 YouTube uploads across 59 competitor channels.

Every channel in the study had produced at least one breakout.

We classified a video as a breakout when its initial public view velocity exceeded 2x the channel's recent velocity baseline. In the underlying competitor-feed system, initial velocity is views divided by hours since publication, the channel baseline is calculated from recent channel video velocities, and a video is flagged as a breakout above 2.0x.

The result was surprisingly clear.

Saturday had the highest breakout rate: 15.7%.

Wednesday had the lowest: 6.5%.

A Saturday upload in this cohort was therefore about:

2.42x as likely to be classified as a breakout as a Wednesday upload.

But that is only half the story.

The overall relationship between weekday and breakout status was statistically detectable:

p = 0.0034

yet the effect size was small:

Cramer's V = 0.086.

And after accounting for the fact that videos from the same channel are related, Saturday still showed higher breakout odds, with a channel-stratified odds ratio of approximately:

1.73x

with a 95% confidence interval of roughly:

1.25x to 2.41x.

So the useful conclusion is not:

Post on Saturday and your video will go viral.

It is:

Day of week may influence early breakout conditions, and Saturday showed the strongest signal in this sample, but timing is a secondary optimization compared with the video itself.

That is much closer to what YouTube's own guidance says.

Three results matter most.

Saturday: 15.7% breakout rate.

Wednesday: 6.5%.

Overall association: statistically detectable, but small.

The difference between Saturday and Wednesday was about:

9.2 percentage points.

And Saturday's breakout rate was approximately:

48% higher than the overall cohort average.

That deserves attention.

It does not deserve superstition.

The Direct Answer: What Is the Best Day to Post on YouTube?

If you have enough channel-specific analytics, the best day to post is usually the day that best matches when your own audience is active and when you can consistently release your strongest content.

If you need a generic starting point, current large-scale external research points toward the weekend for long-form YouTube, particularly Sunday and Saturday.

Our smaller channel-relative study found:

Saturday strongest

and:

Wednesday weakest.

But YouTube explicitly says that publish time is not known to determine a video's long-term performance. The recommendation system can continue finding the right viewers after publication, regardless of when the video first went live.

So the best practical rule is:

Use your audience data first. Use broad day-of-week research as a tie-breaker, not as the foundation of your content strategy.

Why We Studied Breakout Rate Instead of Average Views

Most "best time to post on YouTube" studies compare something like:

  • Views
  • Engagement
  • Likes
  • 30-day performance
  • Median performance by posting slot

Those can all be useful.

But they have a major problem.

A video from a 20-million-subscriber channel can generate millions of views while performing below that creator's normal level.

Meanwhile, a 100,000-view video from a small channel may be an extraordinary success.

So instead of asking:

Which day produced the most views?

we asked:

Which day produced the largest share of videos moving unusually fast relative to their own channel?

That shifts the unit of analysis.

We are measuring:

relative surprise

rather than:

absolute size.

This is the same principle behind our broader YouTube outlier analysis and breakout video research.

How We Analyzed the 2,624 Uploads

The source dataset contained public competitor video observations from OverseerOS.

We first isolated channels that had at least one observed breakout.

That produced:

59 competitor channels.

Across those channels, there were:

2,624 uploads

in the usable cohort.

Of those:

277 were classified as breakouts

and:

2,347 were normal uploads.

The overall breakout rate was therefore:

10.6%.

How breakout status was calculated

The underlying competitor-feed system calculates:

Initial velocity = public views ÷ hours since upload

It then calculates a recent channel baseline from observed video velocity and expresses the new video's velocity relative to that baseline.

A video is marked is_breakout = true when its viral score exceeds:

2.0x.

This is important.

The study is not measuring:

Did the video eventually become the channel's biggest video ever?

It is measuring:

Did this video show unusually strong initial velocity relative to that channel's recent norm?

Those are different questions.

Finding 1: Saturday Had the Highest Breakout Rate

Saturday produced:

345 uploads

of which:

54 became breakouts.

Breakout rate:

15.7%.

That was the highest rate of any day.

For comparison, the entire seven-day cohort averaged:

10.6%.

So Saturday was not simply the day with the most breakouts because creators posted the most videos there.

In fact, Friday had substantially more uploads:

483 Friday uploads

versus:

345 Saturday uploads.

Yet Friday generated fewer breakouts:

47

versus:

54 on Saturday.

That distinction matters.

If Saturday only led because creators uploaded more frequently on Saturday, the result would be much less interesting.

It didn't.

Finding 2: Wednesday Was the Clear Low Point

Wednesday had:

417 uploads

and only:

27 breakouts.

Breakout rate:

6.5%.

That makes Wednesday's breakout rate less than half of Saturday's.

Saturday:

15.7%

Wednesday:

6.5%

Relative difference:

approximately:

2.42x.

Again, do not translate that into:

Saturday videos get 2.42x more views.

That would be wrong.

It means:

The observed probability of crossing this specific 2x velocity threshold was about 2.42 times as high on Saturday as Wednesday in this cohort.

That distinction is critical.

Finding 3: Monday Was Surprisingly Strong

Monday ranked second.

Uploads:

344

Breakouts:

43

Rate:

12.5%.

That puts Monday above:

  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Sunday

This is useful because the common creator intuition is often:

Weekends good, weekdays bad.

Our data does not support that simple split.

Thursday also performed relatively well:

11.3%.

So the pattern was not:

weekend vs weekday.

It was more irregular:

Saturday strong

Monday strong

Thursday above average

Wednesday weak

with the remaining days closer to the middle.

That alone should make creators suspicious of universal calendar rules.

Finding 4: Sunday Did Not Win Our Study

This is where the study becomes especially useful against the current SERP.

vidIQ's 2026 study of 40.2 million U.S. long-form videos found Sunday about 3.5% above a channel's average posting day, Saturday about 2.2% above average, and Wednesday about 2.2% below average.

Buffer's 2026 study also ranked Sunday highest for long-form engagement.

Our data agreed with them on one broad pattern:

Wednesday was weak.

But our winner was different:

Saturday.

Sunday in our cohort was only:

9.2%.

Below the overall:

10.6%.

Does that invalidate the larger studies?

No.

It tells us the metric and sample matter.

vidIQ looked at tens of millions of U.S. long-form uploads and normalized 30-day performance relative to channel averages.

Buffer studied engagement across long-form videos and Shorts, with separate posting-time patterns for the two formats.

We looked at:

early channel-relative breakout velocity

inside:

59 competitor channels selected because they had at least one breakout.

Different question.

Different sample.

Different result.

That is exactly why the correct answer cannot be:

Sunday is objectively the best day on YouTube.

Finding 5: The Day-of-Week Association Was Real but Small

We tested whether breakout status was independent of publication weekday.

The seven-day chi-square comparison produced:

p = 0.0034.

That means the weekday distribution was unlikely to look this uneven under the statistical null model.

But statistical significance is not the same thing as strategic importance.

The corresponding effect size was:

Cramer's V = 0.086.

That is small.

This may be the single most important statistic in the article.

Because it prevents us from turning a real association into an exaggerated content strategy.

Yes:

Day of week contained signal.

No:

Day of week did not explain most breakout behavior.

A title-thumbnail idea can be dramatically wrong.

A topic can be dramatically wrong.

A weak opening can lose the viewer immediately.

Changing Wednesday to Saturday cannot rescue every bad video.

Finding 6: The Saturday Signal Survived a Channel-Level Check

There is another methodological problem we needed to address.

Videos from the same channel are not independent observations.

One creator might:

  • Publish heavily on Saturday
  • Have an unusually strong audience
  • Produce many breakouts
  • Artificially make Saturday look better

So we compared Saturday with the rest of the week while stratifying by channel.

The pooled channel-stratified odds ratio was approximately:

1.73.

95% confidence interval:

1.25 to 2.41.

The stratified test remained statistically significant.

That means the Saturday signal did not disappear once channel identity was taken into account.

We also checked concentration.

Saturday breakouts appeared across:

30 different channels.

And no single channel contributed more than:

6 Saturday breakouts.

So the result was not simply one hyper-successful creator posting every weekend.

That makes the Saturday finding more credible.

It still does not make it causal.

Finding 7: Format Could Be Part of the Explanation

Posting-day studies can be badly distorted if they mix different formats.

A creator publishing long documentaries may choose different days from a creator posting multiple short videos.

In our cohort, duration metadata was not complete enough across all 2,624 uploads to make format the primary analysis.

That is important to disclose.

Among the subset with usable duration data, we had:

851 duration-qualified long-form uploads across 47 channels

and only:

88 duration-based short-form proxy uploads across 13 channels.

The short-form sample is far too small to support a strong day-of-week conclusion.

The long-form sensitivity check was more useful.

Within that subset:

Saturday breakout rate:

16.1%

Wednesday:

6.9%

So the broad Saturday-versus-Wednesday pattern survived in the long-form metadata subset.

But the primary result remains the full 2,624-upload cohort.

Important Shorts caveat

The short-form research label is based on duration, not a perfect reconstruction of YouTube's official Shorts classification.

It should therefore be treated as a short-form proxy, not an official Shorts flag.

Finding 8: The Current SERP Is More Consistent Than It Looks

At first glance, current research seems contradictory.

vidIQ:

Sunday best.

Buffer:

Sunday best for long-form, Friday best for Shorts.

OverseerOS:

Saturday best for breakout velocity.

YouTube:

Publish time is not known to affect long-term performance.

But these statements can coexist.

They are measuring different things.

Long-term recommendation

YouTube says the recommendation system can continue finding relevant viewers regardless of when a normal video was published. Publishing while viewers are active may improve early viewership, but the company says it has not observed evidence that publish time changes long-term viewership.

Early velocity

Our study is specifically sensitive to early view velocity.

A day when more relevant viewers are immediately available could plausibly influence that metric.

That remains a hypothesis, not proof.

Engagement

Buffer's study is centered on engagement patterns, and it found different best times for long-form and Shorts.

30-day normalized views

vidIQ's analysis looked at performance relative to each channel's average day and found a modest weekend advantage that shrank in importance compared with channel-specific timing.

The apparent contradiction mostly disappears once you ask:

Best day for what outcome?

The Best Day Is Probably a Head-Start Variable

This is the framework that best fits all the available evidence.

Think of posting day as potentially influencing:

the starting conditions

rather than:

the eventual ceiling.

Suppose a video's likely audience is especially active on Saturday.

Publishing Saturday might help it encounter:

  • More early impressions
  • More immediate viewer choices
  • Faster feedback
  • Stronger initial velocity

But if the video is genuinely valuable to a large audience, YouTube can continue recommending it beyond that first window.

That matches YouTube's public explanation that audience-active publishing can help early viewership while long-term performance is not known to depend on publish time.

This is a much better mental model than:

The algorithm loves Saturdays.

Your Own Audience Data Should Override This Article

YouTube already gives creators something more valuable than any generic study.

Inside the Audience tab in YouTube Analytics, the "When your viewers are on YouTube" report shows when people who watch your content are active across YouTube during the previous 28 days.

That means your decision hierarchy should be:

First: your audience

When are the people who actually watch your channel online?

Second: your format

Are you publishing long-form, Shorts, Live, or Premieres?

Audience behavior differs by format, and YouTube itself recommends comparing like with like.

Third: the content's urgency

A breaking-news video has a different timing problem from an evergreen tutorial.

Fourth: broad benchmark data

If everything else is equal, current research gives you a reason to test weekend publishing.

But generic benchmarks should not override strong first-party channel evidence.

Why You Should Not Blindly Move Every Upload to Saturday

Suppose you normally publish:

Wednesday at 6 PM

and your audience expects it.

You suddenly move to Saturday because this study says Saturday had the highest breakout rate.

Several things can go wrong.

Your specific audience may be less active.

Your niche may behave differently.

Your team may rush production to hit the new date.

Your most loyal viewers may already have a routine around Wednesday.

The video itself may be weaker.

And because our overall effect size was small, the potential timing advantage can easily be overwhelmed by a larger content disadvantage.

The research should create a testable hypothesis:

Would Saturday improve early performance for this channel?

Not a command:

Every creator must upload Saturday.

A Better Way to Test Posting Day on Your Own Channel

Generic studies become valuable when they tell you what to test.

Do not move one video and declare victory.

Build a cleaner experiment.

Keep the content type similar

Do not compare:

a major documentary on Saturday

with:

a minor update on Wednesday.

The content itself would dominate the comparison.

Keep the format similar

Long-form with long-form.

Shorts with Shorts.

Use multiple uploads

One winner or loser proves almost nothing.

Compare early and long-term performance separately

For example:

First 24 hours

  • Impressions
  • CTR
  • Views
  • Watch time

Then:

7 days

and:

28 days.

If Saturday only improves the first 24 hours but performance equalizes later, that tells you something important.

Compare against your own historical baseline

YouTube's own channel-health guidance says performance benchmarks vary across content and formats, and recommends optimizing against your own historical metrics rather than relying on universal external benchmarks.

That principle is exactly right for posting-day research.

Do Not Confuse Upload Time With Publish Time

You can upload a video before viewers ever see it.

YouTube distinguishes between importing the video file and actually publishing it to viewers. It also allows creators to schedule the date, time, and time zone at which a private video becomes public.

For timing research, publication is the relevant event.

Not the moment the file finished uploading.

The YouTube Data API's snippet.publishedAt field records the date and time the video was published, which can differ from its original upload time.

That is the timestamp underlying this study.

The Time-Zone Problem Matters

There is an important limitation hidden in almost every global posting-day analysis.

A timestamp such as:

Saturday 00:30 UTC

may still be:

Friday evening

for part of the video's audience.

Our weekday classifications were derived from the recorded publication timestamp in UTC.

We do not have the private creator time zone or geographic audience distribution for each competitor.

So some uploads near midnight UTC will be assigned to a different weekday than the creator would describe locally.

That introduces classification noise.

It is another reason not to interpret:

Saturday 15.7%

as a universal calendar law.

For your own channel, use your actual audience geography and Studio activity data instead.

Why "Best Time to Post" Articles Often Overpromise

There is an SEO problem around this topic.

A searcher wants a direct answer.

So publishers give them:

Tuesday at 3 PM.

It is satisfying.

It is also often false precision.

The real system contains at least four separate variables:

Day

Saturday versus Wednesday.

Clock time

Morning versus evening.

Audience time zone

Stockholm is not Los Angeles.

Content type

Evergreen tutorial is not breaking news.

Then add:

  • Shorts vs long-form
  • Channel size
  • Existing audience habits
  • Notifications
  • Topic demand
  • Competition

A universal hour becomes difficult to defend very quickly.

That is why YouTube's own guidance tells creators not to overthink publish time and emphasizes matching videos to viewers rather than satisfying a fixed upload-hour rule.

What About the Best Time of Day?

This study does not claim to identify one best upload hour.

And we deliberately do not derive a universal hour from the UTC timestamps.

Without reliable creator-local time zones and audience geography, a result such as:

18:00 UTC performs best

would be strategically weak.

Current external research also suggests exact hour is a smaller lever than many creators assume.

vidIQ's 40.2-million-video study found that differences between upload hours narrowed substantially by 30 days and recommends using the channel's own Audience heatmap over a universal hour.

Buffer found more visible hour-by-format differences, including Sunday mornings for long-form and Friday evenings for Shorts, but similarly presents these as broad benchmarks rather than guarantees for every channel.

The safest answer is therefore:

Use YouTube Studio to determine your best hour.

Broad research is more useful for generating candidate windows than choosing an exact clock time.

Does the Best Posting Day Change for Shorts?

Probably.

Buffer's 2026 dataset found long-form and Shorts had very different peak posting patterns, with Sunday leading long-form while Friday led Shorts.

YouTube also says audience behavior differs across formats and recommends comparing videos within the same format when analyzing performance.

Our own 2,624-upload study does not have enough duration coverage to publish a robust independent Shorts weekday ranking.

So we will not manufacture one.

The honest conclusion is:

Do not assume the Saturday result applies identically to Shorts.

Does Posting on Saturday Cause More Breakouts?

No causal claim is justified.

Our study is observational.

Creators choose their own publication schedules.

That creates selection effects.

For example, creators might save:

  • Their biggest videos
  • Entertainment uploads
  • Special projects
  • Weekend-oriented topics

for Saturday.

If those videos were already stronger ideas, Saturday could inherit part of the performance advantage without causing it.

The reverse is also possible.

Certain audience conditions on Saturday could contribute to stronger initial velocity.

The data cannot separate these mechanisms cleanly.

So the supported statement is:

Saturday publication was associated with higher breakout frequency in this cohort.

Not:

Saturday caused the breakouts.

The Strategic Value of a Small Effect

A small effect can still matter when it is cheap.

Changing your upload day usually costs much less than:

  • Completely changing niche
  • Hiring another editor
  • Producing a second video
  • Redesigning your entire content strategy

So imagine two publication days are equally easy operationally.

Everything else is equal.

Your audience data does not strongly favor either one.

One has repeatedly shown better early performance.

Use it.

That is a sensible optimization.

What makes no sense is sacrificing a stronger video to capture a small timing advantage.

Think of timing as:

last-mile optimization.

Not:

the engine.

The Publishing Priority Stack

A strong YouTube release strategy should optimize variables in roughly this order:

1. Topic

Is there enough audience demand?

2. Idea

Is the specific video proposition worth choosing?

3. Packaging

Does the title-thumbnail combination make the value obvious or intriguing?

4. Opening and experience

Does the video fulfill the click quickly and keep delivering?

5. Audience fit

Is this a video the channel's current or reachable viewers plausibly want?

6. Timing

Now choose the strongest publication window.

Moving a weak idea from Wednesday to Saturday does not transform the first five variables.

That is why timing should come late.

How to Research Competitor Timing With OverseerOS

Combine Posting-Day Research With Outlier Research

Timing becomes more useful when connected to the rest of the performance system.

For example:

Our YouTube title-length study found that breakout titles were usually close to each channel's own normal title length.

Our video-length study found that strong long-form breakouts were only slightly different from their own channel's normal runtime.

Our breakout-vs-normal analysis similarly found that simple metadata variables could remain close to normal even when performance changed dramatically.

Now posting day gives us another piece.

Timing may contain signal.

But none of these simple surface variables explains the full breakout.

The better workflow is:

Find the outlier first, then identify which variables genuinely changed.

That is how you stop confusing correlation with strategy.

What This Study Adds Beyond the Current SERP

The strongest current articles already have much larger samples than ours.

We are not going to pretend 2,624 videos is larger than 40 million.

That would be meaningless.

The information gain comes from the metric.

Most large studies ask:

Which posting day has higher average views or engagement?

Our research asks:

Which posting day produces more videos that exceed their own channel's recent velocity baseline by at least 2x?

That gives us a different lens.

It also produces a useful convergence.

Our winner was Saturday rather than Sunday.

But all three current datasets point toward a broader pattern:

weekend strength exists in at least some long-form-oriented data

and:

Wednesday tends to be weak in more than one large/current analysis.

YouTube then gives the strategic ceiling on how far to take that result:

publish time is not known to determine long-term performance.

Put together, that is a much stronger answer than any one benchmark.

What This Study Does Not Prove

Saturday is not universally the best day

Saturday ranked first in this specific cohort.

Other high-quality studies rank Sunday first for long-form.

Your own channel may rank another day first.

We did not run a randomized experiment

Creators chose their publication days.

Topic, format, effort, audience, and content quality can all differ by weekday.

Breakout means early velocity, not lifetime success

The 2x threshold measures initial performance relative to a recent channel velocity baseline.

A breakout may later slow down.

A normal initial performer may later become evergreen.

The channels were not randomly sampled from YouTube

They came from the OverseerOS competitor-feed corpus.

This is a convenience sample of competitor channels selected through product use.

Videos are clustered inside channels

We therefore included a channel-stratified check instead of pretending 2,624 videos were 2,624 independent creators.

UTC weekday is not creator-local weekday

Some uploads close to midnight can move between local calendar days.

Format data was incomplete

The long-form sensitivity result was directionally consistent with the full study, but the short-form proxy sample was too small for a standalone recommendation.

We cannot see competitor private analytics

We do not have their:

  • Impressions
  • CTR
  • Audience retention
  • Traffic source
  • Notification performance
  • Viewer geography
  • "When your viewers are on YouTube" heatmap

Those variables would materially improve a timing analysis.

Final Verdict

So, what is the best day to post on YouTube?

In our analysis of:

2,624 uploads

across:

59 competitor channels

Saturday had the highest observed breakout rate:

15.7%.

Wednesday had the lowest:

6.5%.

That made Saturday's observed breakout rate approximately:

2.42x Wednesday's.

The overall weekday association was statistically detectable:

p = 0.0034.

But the effect size was small:

Cramer's V = 0.086.

And after accounting for channel clustering, Saturday still showed higher breakout odds:

approximately 1.73x

with the channel-stratified confidence interval remaining above 1.

So day of week appears to contain some signal.

But it is not the main signal.

That conclusion fits remarkably well with YouTube's own guidance: publishing when your audience is active may help early viewership, while publish time is not known to determine the video's long-term performance.

Therefore:

If all else is equal, Saturday is a reasonable day to test.

But if your own Audience tab tells you Thursday is your strongest window:

use Thursday.

If your best idea is ready Wednesday:

do not weaken the video for three days just because a benchmark likes Saturday.

And if you are spending hours optimizing the calendar while ignoring the topic, thumbnail, title, or first 30 seconds:

you are optimizing the smaller lever first.

The best posting day can give a strong video a better starting position.

It cannot make the video strong.
