How Often Should You Post on YouTube? Data From 168 Breakout Channels

We analyzed 168 breakout YouTube channels to find how often they actually post. Long-form channels averaged around 1 to 2 uploads per week, while Shorts posted far more.

YouTube upload frequency research comparing long-form and Shorts publishing schedules across 168 breakout channels.

How often should you post on YouTube?

For long-form creators, the answer from our breakout-channel data is surprisingly reasonable:

About 1 to 2 videos per week is a strong starting benchmark.

OverseerOS analyzed the recent publishing cadence of 168 breakout YouTube channels that had been surfaced into our Breakout Channel feed.

Among the 57 long-form-first channels:

  • median uploads in the previous 30 days: 7
  • equivalent weekly pace: 1.6 videos per week
  • 25th percentile: 3 uploads per month
  • 75th percentile: 17 uploads per month
  • 59.6% published 8 videos or fewer in 30 days
  • only 14.0% published 30 or more

Shorts were completely different.

Among 105 Shorts-first channels:

  • median uploads in 30 days: 23
  • equivalent weekly pace: 5.4 videos per week
  • 25th percentile: 15 uploads
  • 75th percentile: 31 uploads
  • 72.4% published at least 16 times
  • 31.4% published at least 30 times

That creates a much better answer than:

You need to upload daily.

or:

One video a week is always enough.

The better rule is:

Upload frequency should follow your format. In this breakout-channel sample, long-form success was compatible with roughly 1 to 2 uploads per week, while Shorts-first channels typically published around 5 times per week.

There is another important finding.

Higher-frequency channels tended to have more recent breakout hits in absolute terms.

But that did not mean every extra upload was equally valuable.

For long-form channels, the median number of breakout hits rose as publishing frequency increased:

  • 0 to 4 uploads: 1.5 hits
  • 5 to 8 uploads: 2 hits
  • 9 to 15 uploads: 3 hits
  • 16 to 30 uploads: 6 hits
  • 31+ uploads: 7 hits

More publishing created more opportunities.

But the incremental return per upload did not rise with it.

That is why the real optimization problem is not:

How many videos can I possibly upload?

It is:

How often can I publish videos that still deserve to exist?

The most important finding is not the overall median of 18 uploads.

That number is misleading because most channels in the sample were Shorts-first.

The answer changes dramatically once you separate formats.

How Often Should You Upload to YouTube?

If you need a practical starting point:

Long-form YouTube

1 to 2 strong videos per week

is a defensible testing range.

The median breakout channel in our long-form-first group published:

7 videos in 30 days

or about:

1.6 per week.

YouTube Shorts

A much faster schedule was normal.

The median Shorts-first breakout channel published:

23 videos in 30 days

or around:

5.4 per week.

Mixed channels

The six mixed-format channels had a median of:

9.5 uploads per 30 days

or about:

2.2 per week.

But the mixed sample is too small to treat that figure as a strong benchmark.

So if you remember one thing:

Do not use the same upload-frequency advice for Shorts and long-form.

Their production economics, viewing behavior, video volume, and content systems are too different.

How We Analyzed 168 Breakout Channels

The data comes from channels published into the OverseerOS Breakout Channel feed.

The current study contains:

168 unique YouTube channels.

The channels were featured between:

November 16, 2025 and August 20, 2026.

At the time their public metrics were captured:

  • median subscriber count was 32,800
  • no channel had reached 1 million subscribers
  • the largest had 819,000
  • median public video count was 57

This makes the sample particularly useful for studying channels that had not already become massive legacy creators.

What "breakout channel" means here

These are channels surfaced because they showed notable recent public performance in OverseerOS discovery workflows.

This is not a random sample of all YouTube channels.

That distinction is critical.

We are asking:

What publishing cadence did breakout channels in this feed actually use?

We are not asking:

What percentage of every YouTube channel succeeds if it posts seven times per month?

The second question would require a large matched control group of non-breakout channels.

Upload frequency

For each channel, we used its stored:

uploads in the previous 30 days

at the time of capture.

That is a rolling activity measure, not the creator's permanent historical upload schedule.

Format groups

The channels were classified into:

  • Shorts-first
  • Long-form-first
  • Mixed

The labels describe the channel's recent content-format pattern.

They do not mean that every upload from a Shorts-first channel was necessarily a Short or every upload from a long-form-first channel was long-form.

Recent breakout hits

We also analyzed each channel's stored recent breakout-hit count.

Those hit metrics are used only as a secondary descriptive analysis.

Historical discovery logic has evolved, so the cleanest part of this study is the upload-frequency distribution itself.

Finding 1: Long-Form Breakout Channels Uploaded a Median of 7 Times Per Month

Among the:

57 long-form-first breakout channels

the median publishing frequency was:

7 uploads in the previous 30 days.

That converts to roughly:

1.6 uploads per week.

The distribution was wide.

25th percentile

3 uploads per month

About:

0.7 per week

Median

7 per month

About:

1.6 per week

75th percentile

17 per month

About:

4.0 per week

So there was clearly no single required schedule.

Some breakout channels published only a few times per month.

Others published almost every day.

But the center of the distribution sat much closer to:

one or two weekly videos

than:

daily long-form uploads.

Finding 2: 60% of Long-Form Breakout Channels Posted Twice a Week or Less

This may be the most reassuring statistic for long-form creators.

Among the 57 long-form-first channels:

59.6%

published:

8 or fewer videos in the previous 30 days.

Eight videos per month is approximately:

1.9 uploads per week.

So the majority of long-form breakout channels in this sample were operating at roughly:

two videos per week or less.

That directly challenges the idea that a serious long-form creator must publish every day to have a chance of breaking out.

Daily publishing existed.

It simply was not the typical pattern.

The Long-Form Cadence Distribution

Here is the full breakdown.

Two facts stand out.

One-third published four times per month or less

That is approximately:

one video per week or less.

Yet these channels still appeared in a breakout-channel dataset.

Only around one in ten published more than daily

Hyper-frequency existed.

It was a minority strategy.

Is One YouTube Video Per Week Enough?

It can be.

This dataset contains direct evidence that channels can show breakout performance while publishing at roughly weekly frequency.

Nineteen of the 57 long-form-first channels published no more than:

4 videos in the previous 30 days.

That does not prove one video per week is optimal.

It proves something narrower and more useful:

Publishing only once per week does not automatically prevent a channel from breaking out.

The real question becomes whether that weekly video is:

  • strong enough
  • differentiated enough
  • packaged well enough
  • aligned with the right audience
  • based on a strong enough topic

One excellent weekly video can create more strategic learning than seven rushed uploads nobody wants.

Is Two Videos Per Week a Good YouTube Schedule?

For long-form creators, it is one of the most defensible starting schedules from this study.

The median breakout channel published:

7 times per 30 days.

That is slightly below two videos per week.

And nearly:

60%

of long-form breakout channels stayed at eight monthly uploads or fewer.

Two weekly videos can provide:

  • more topic experiments
  • more title and thumbnail tests
  • more audience feedback
  • more chances for a breakout

without automatically requiring a daily production machine.

But there is still one condition:

The second upload cannot materially destroy the quality of the first.

If moving from one video per week to two means:

  • weaker ideas
  • rushed scripts
  • worse thumbnails
  • poor editing
  • repetitive topics

the numerical increase in upload opportunities may not be worth it.

Finding 3: Shorts-First Breakout Channels Operated at a Completely Different Cadence

The Shorts-first channels were not just slightly more frequent.

They were operating another publishing model.

Among:

105 Shorts-first breakout channels

median uploads in 30 days:

23

That equals roughly:

5.4 uploads per week.

The middle 50% ranged from:

15 to 31 uploads per month.

Equivalent to approximately:

3.5 to 7.2 uploads per week.

So for Shorts-first channels, a near-daily schedule was much closer to normal.

72% of Shorts-First Channels Published at Least 16 Times Per Month

Among Shorts-first channels:

72.4%

published at least:

16 videos in 30 days.

That is approximately:

3.7 uploads per week.

And:

31.4%

published at least:

30 times.

That is roughly daily.

The format difference is enormous.

Long-form

Median:

7 uploads

Shorts-first

Median:

23 uploads

Shorts-first channels published at more than:

3x the median long-form cadence.

That alone is enough to make generic "how often should you post on YouTube?" advice incomplete.

This is why format should be the first question in any upload-frequency discussion.

Finding 4: More Uploads Were Associated With More Total Breakout Hits

Now we get to the part creators usually care about.

Does posting more give you more chances to win?

Within this already-selected breakout-channel sample, absolute recent breakout hits increased as publishing frequency increased.

Across all 168 channels:

That is a strong monotonic pattern in absolute hit count.

Higher-volume channels had more recent breakout hits.

But there is a huge caveat.

More Breakout Hits Does Not Mean Upload Frequency Caused Them

This dataset was selected from:

channels that had already shown breakout characteristics.

That creates selection bias.

Imagine two creators.

Creator A

Uploads twice.

One video breaks out.

Creator B

Uploads 50 times.

Ten videos break out.

Both can enter a breakout-channel dataset.

If we then compare their hit rate, Creator A appears unbelievably efficient:

50% hit rate

while Creator B gets:

20%.

But that does not mean publishing fewer videos caused better efficiency.

The low-frequency creator may be present precisely because one of the few uploads happened to win.

This is why we treat:

absolute breakout-hit counts

as descriptive and the:

hit-per-upload ratio

with much more caution.

Finding 5: More Long-Form Uploads Created More Wins, but Not Proportionally More

Within the long-form-first group:

The direction is clear.

Channels publishing more had more total hits.

But compare:

16 to 30 uploads

Median:

6 breakout hits

31+ uploads

Median:

7 hits

The number of uploads can rise dramatically without the number of breakouts rising proportionally.

That is the strategic problem with volume.

Every additional upload has a cost:

  • idea quality
  • writing
  • filming
  • editing
  • thumbnail production
  • review
  • opportunity cost

If doubling production only produces one additional meaningful winner, the economics may become poor.

The Goal Is Not Maximum Frequency

There are two optimization targets.

Maximum output

How many videos can we physically publish?

Maximum expected value

What publishing pace creates the most total channel growth without reducing the quality of each attempt too much?

Those are not the same.

A creator can increase frequency and accidentally reduce:

  • topic quality
  • thumbnail quality
  • originality
  • retention
  • research depth

At that point:

more attempts

can become:

more mediocre attempts.

The best schedule sits below that breaking point.

Think in "Quality-Adjusted Attempts"

This is a more useful mental model.

Suppose Creator A can make:

4 excellent videos per month.

Creator B can make:

12 average videos per month.

Publishing frequency alone says Creator B has three times the opportunity.

But if Creator A's ideas are consistently:

  • more differentiated
  • better packaged
  • better researched
  • better retained

the real number of competitive attempts may be much closer.

Instead of counting:

uploads

count:

credible shots at winning.

Your optimal frequency is the highest number of credible shots you can sustain.

Finding 6: Smaller Long-Form Breakout Channels Actually Uploaded More Often

This result was unexpected.

Among the long-form-first breakout channels:

The smallest long-form channels published much more frequently.

Median under 10K:

13 uploads per month

Median 100K to 999K:

That is more than a:

4x difference.

This should not be interpreted causally.

Larger channels may:

  • produce higher-effort videos
  • have more established audiences
  • publish different formats
  • invest more in each upload

Smaller breakout channels may also be in a more aggressive experimentation phase.

But one useful lesson survives:

More established channels in this breakout sample did not need to publish more frequently to maintain breakout-level activity.

Volume is not automatically a sign of channel maturity.

Shorts Cadence Was Much More Stable Across Channel Size

Shorts-first channels looked different.

That is remarkably consistent.

Regardless of subscriber tier, the median Shorts-first breakout channel was publishing roughly:

22 to 26 times per month.

So the high-frequency pattern appears much more structural to the format.

For Shorts-first channels, frequent publishing was common across sizes.

How Often Should a New YouTube Channel Post?

If you have no meaningful channel history yet, use a schedule that gives you enough experiments to learn without destroying quality.

For long-form, a practical starting point is:

1 video per week

if production is difficult.

Or:

2 videos per week

if you can maintain the same standard.

The important thing is not the calendar itself.

You need enough uploads to learn:

  • which topics attract viewers
  • which titles get clicked
  • which thumbnails work
  • which formats retain attention
  • which audience promises create repeatable outliers

A channel with:

3 uploads

barely has a dataset.

A channel with:

20 deliberate uploads

has far more evidence.

Frequency helps because it accelerates learning.

But only if the experiments are useful.

A Better Way to Think About the First 20 Videos

Do not think:

I need 20 uploads so YouTube understands my channel.

Think:

I need enough deliberate experiments to understand my audience.

For each upload, test something.

Topic

Which viewer desire are you targeting?

Packaging

What title and thumbnail mechanism are you testing?

Hook

What makes the viewer continue after clicking?

Format

What content structure are you using?

Result

How did the video perform against your normal baseline?

Now publishing frequency becomes a learning system rather than a superstition.

Should You Upload Every Day on YouTube?

For long-form:

Usually not necessary.

Only:

14.0%

of the long-form-first breakout channels published at least 30 times in the previous 30 days.

Most did not.

For Shorts:

Daily publishing was much more normal.

Among Shorts-first channels:

31.4%

published at least 30 times in 30 days.

And the median was already:

23 per month.

So:

Daily uploads are a format-dependent strategy, not a universal YouTube growth rule.

Is Uploading More Often Better for YouTube?

Publishing more creates more opportunities.

That part is mathematically obvious.

If every upload had the exact same expected quality, making:

10 attempts

gives you more chances than making:

2.

The problem is that upload quality is rarely constant.

Increasing frequency can affect:

  • topic selection
  • research depth
  • scripting
  • production
  • editing
  • packaging
  • creator energy

So the real function looks more like:

Expected channel growth = number of uploads × average opportunity quality

If frequency doubles but average quality falls by more than half, you may have gained nothing.

That is why the optimal schedule is channel-specific.

Does Uploading More Help the YouTube Algorithm?

Do not frame the problem as:

Will the algorithm reward me for posting more?

That leads creators toward mechanical behavior.

A more useful chain is:

More uploads → more viewer-facing experiments
→ more chances to discover strong topics and packaging
→ more opportunities for viewers to respond
→ more information about what the audience actually wants

Frequency is useful because it can increase:

learning velocity

and:

opportunity volume.

It should not be treated as a magic ranking signal.

Consistency vs Frequency

These words are often confused.

Frequency

How often you publish.

Consistency

How reliably viewers can understand what type of value your channel provides.

You can be extremely consistent while uploading:

once per week.

You can also be extremely inconsistent while uploading:

three times per day.

A channel posting random:

  • topics
  • formats
  • quality levels
  • audience promises

is not strategically consistent just because it never misses Tuesday.

Consistency is more about:

Can the right viewer trust what they are going to get?

The schedule is only one part of that.

Do You Need to Upload on the Same Day Every Week?

Not because Tuesday itself is magical.

But a predictable production schedule can be useful operationally.

It can help you:

  • plan scripts
  • batch production
  • prepare thumbnails
  • review quality
  • avoid last-minute publishing
  • build audience expectations

The danger comes when:

We upload every Thursday

becomes:

This mediocre idea must go live because today is Thursday.

The calendar should support the content.

It should not force weak content into existence.

What Happens If You Miss an Upload?

One missed upload does not erase the strategic value of your channel.

The important question is why it was missed.

Good reason

The video needed more:

  • research
  • rewriting
  • editing
  • thumbnail work

That may be a worthwhile delay.

Bad reason

There is no functioning content system.

That becomes a process problem.

The long-term goal is not perfect calendar obedience.

It is:

sustainable production of competitive videos.

Quality vs Quantity on YouTube

This debate is usually framed badly.

Creators ask:

Quality or quantity?

The actual answer is:

Enough quantity to learn, enough quality to compete.

Zero quantity means:

no experiments.

Infinite quantity with weak quality means:

lots of evidence that viewers are not interested.

You need both.

Early channels usually need a meaningful number of experiments.

Established channels can often afford to make fewer, higher-conviction bets.

Our long-form subscriber-size breakdown was consistent with that pattern descriptively, although the sample cannot prove the reason.

The Upload-Frequency Trap

Suppose your current schedule is:

one strong video every seven days.

You decide:

Successful creators upload more. I should publish three times per week.

Now you have one-third the time for each video.

What happens?

Topic research gets rushed.

Your title gets written in ten minutes.

Thumbnail review disappears.

The script contains filler.

The opening is weaker.

You technically increased:

upload frequency by 3x.

But you may have reduced:

competitive quality by more than 3x.

That is not growth.

That is throughput theater.

Find Your Production Frontier

Every creator has a point where frequency starts damaging quality.

Call it your:

production frontier.

Below the frontier:

You may be leaving useful experiments on the table.

Above the frontier:

Each additional video begins weakening the entire system.

The goal is to operate close to the frontier without crossing it.

Example

At one video per week:

  • excellent research
  • excellent script
  • excellent thumbnail
  • plenty of spare capacity

Maybe you can increase to two.

At two:

  • quality unchanged
  • manageable workload
  • twice the experimentation

Great.

At three:

  • weak research
  • rushed packaging
  • editing backlog
  • constant stress

Then two may be the better operating point.

The answer comes from your system, not somebody else's calendar.

How to Find Your Ideal YouTube Upload Frequency

Run this as an experiment.

Step 1: Establish your baseline

Take your previous:

10 to 20 comparable uploads.

Record:

  • uploads per month
  • median views
  • views-to-subscriber ratio
  • relative VPH
  • CTR
  • average view duration
  • retention
  • production hours per video

Step 2: Identify your current bottleneck

Are you limited by:

  • ideas?
  • scripting?
  • filming?
  • editing?
  • thumbnails?
  • money?
  • time?

Do not increase frequency without knowing what will break first.

Step 3: Increase frequency slightly

If you publish:

4 times per month

test:

6

before jumping to:

20.

Step 4: Hold quality variables stable

Do not simultaneously change:

  • niche
  • video format
  • runtime
  • editing style
  • upload frequency

or you will not know what caused the result.

Step 5: Compare medians

One viral upload can distort your judgment.

Compare the median performance of each publishing period.

Step 6: Measure production cost

If views increase 15% but workload increases 100%, you may have made the business worse.

Step 7: Keep the highest sustainable frequency

The winning schedule is the one that improves total output value without noticeably degrading each video's competitiveness.

A Practical Long-Form Schedule

If you want a simple starting framework from the data:

One upload per week

Best for:

  • research-heavy creators
  • documentaries
  • solo creators
  • high editing requirements
  • newer creators still developing systems

Two uploads per week

Best for:

  • strong production systems
  • lighter production formats
  • teams
  • creators who need faster experimentation

This is near the center of our breakout-channel data.

Three to five uploads per week

Possible for:

  • commentary
  • timely topics
  • news
  • relatively repeatable production

But quality control becomes increasingly important.

Daily long-form

A specialized model.

It existed in the breakout sample.

It was not the norm.

A Practical Shorts Schedule

The Shorts-first dataset supports a much higher starting cadence.

A reasonable test range is:

4 to 7 Shorts per week

if quality remains stable.

Why?

The middle 50% of Shorts-first breakout channels published:

15 to 31 videos per month

or roughly:

3.5 to 7.2 per week.

The median sat at:

5.4 per week.

That makes near-daily publishing much more representative of this format.

Again:

Do not create seven bad Shorts simply to hit a benchmark.

But the format clearly supported much more frequent experimentation.

What About Posting Multiple Times Per Day?

For Shorts, some channels can make it work.

For long-form, it is a much less common operating model in this breakout dataset.

Before publishing multiple times per day, ask:

  • Are the videos targeting different viewer intents?
  • Is each one competitive?
  • Can production quality remain stable?
  • Are you learning anything from each upload?
  • Is the audience actually consuming that volume?

If the answer is no, more uploads may simply create internal competition for your own attention and production resources.

Does Posting Too Much Hurt a YouTube Channel?

This study cannot establish a universal frequency where publishing becomes harmful.

It does show why assuming:

more is always better

is incomplete.

For long-form channels, total breakout hits rose with frequency.

But the gains did not scale proportionally with uploads.

And the highest-frequency group was relatively small.

The danger is not necessarily that YouTube mechanically punishes volume.

The practical danger is:

quality dilution.

If viewers repeatedly receive weaker ideas, weaker packaging, or repetitive content, more volume exposes them to more weak decisions.

The Real Reason Frequency Matters: More Shots on Goal

Frequency has one undeniable strategic benefit.

Every upload creates another opportunity to discover:

  • a breakout topic
  • a stronger thumbnail style
  • a better title structure
  • a new audience segment
  • a repeatable format

If your videos are independent experiments, more experiments can accelerate learning.

This is why a creator publishing one video every two months may need years to collect evidence that another creator gets in six months.

But the shots have to be:

credible shots.

Launching more bad ideas faster is not useful experimentation.

How to Find What to Upload More Often

Before increasing frequency, solve the idea problem.

This is where competitor research becomes useful.

Find channels breaking out now

Find the repeated winners

Upload Frequency Should Follow Idea Supply

A creator should not decide:

I will upload four times per week

before knowing whether the channel can produce:

200 worthy ideas per year.

That is backwards.

Start with:

How many strong, non-repetitive opportunities can this content system realistically generate?

Then build the schedule around that.

This connects directly with our research on sticking to one YouTube niche.

Successful channels can vary the specific subject while preserving a coherent audience promise.

That gives you more idea supply without becoming random.

Upload Frequency Should Also Follow Video Length

A 45-minute documentary and a 6-minute commentary video should not automatically have the same schedule.

Our YouTube video length study found that strong reach was compatible with much longer videos.

But longer videos often require more:

  • scripting
  • research
  • editing
  • review

So frequency should be evaluated together with:

production depth.

A creator making:

four 30-minute videos per month

may be producing far more total content than someone making:

eight 5-minute videos.

Upload count alone hides that.

Upload Frequency vs Breakout Timing

Frequency also changes how quickly you receive feedback.

Our YouTube breakout timing study found that breakout activity was heavily concentrated in the first week, although meaningful breakout performance could remain present later.

A creator publishing weekly therefore has a natural rhythm:

Upload Frequency vs VPH

Another reason not to judge frequency by total views alone:

Channels operate at different baselines.

Our YouTube VPH research showed that a video with modest raw VPH can still be a major breakout for its channel.

So when testing a higher schedule, compare:

relative performance per upload

not only:

total monthly views.

If doubling frequency increases total monthly views but each video's relative performance collapses, investigate whether quality is being diluted.

That is the actual optimization problem.

YouTube Upload Schedule Checklist

Before increasing your upload frequency, ask:

  • Is my current schedule sustainable?
  • Do I have enough genuinely strong ideas?
  • Can I increase volume without weakening thumbnails?
  • Can I maintain script quality?
  • Can I maintain editing quality?
  • Am I learning from every upload?
  • Does the format support this cadence?
  • Am I comparing against my own channel baseline?
  • Will additional uploads improve total output value?
  • Am I increasing frequency because of evidence or anxiety?

If quality deteriorates noticeably, you have probably crossed your useful production frontier.

What This Study Does Not Prove

This research has important limitations.

The sample contains breakout channels

This is the biggest limitation.

The 168 channels were already surfaced into a Breakout Channel feed.

They are not a random sample of all channels.

Therefore we cannot say:

Publishing 7 times per month gives you X% chance of success.

That would require a matched population of non-breakout channels.

We cannot prove upload frequency caused the breakout performance

High-performing channels may publish more because they:

  • have teams
  • have better systems
  • have more money
  • are in faster-moving niches
  • produce easier-to-scale formats

Frequency may be partly an outcome of channel structure rather than a cause of performance.

The upload count is a 30-day snapshot

It describes recent publishing activity at capture.

It is not necessarily the channel's permanent historical schedule.

The channels were captured across different dates

The feed spans channels featured between November 2025 and August 2026.

This is not one synchronized platform-wide snapshot.

Format classification is simplified

"Shorts-first" and "long-form-first" summarize recent content behavior.

Individual channels can publish both formats.

Recent breakout-hit metrics are secondary

The feed's discovery and breakout logic has evolved over time.

That is why the strongest conclusions in this article come from:

upload frequency itself

rather than trying to calculate a precise universal breakout probability from the stored hit counts.

Hit-per-upload comparisons contain selection bias

Low-frequency channels entered the breakout dataset because they had already shown notable performance.

That can make their apparent breakout efficiency look artificially strong.

Do not use those ratios as proof that publishing less causes higher efficiency.

Subscriber count does not capture resources

Two 30,000-subscriber channels can have completely different:

  • budgets
  • team sizes
  • production systems
  • content formats

So subscriber-tier cadence differences should be treated as descriptive.

No channel in this study had 1M+ subscribers

The largest channel had:

819,000 subscribers.

The findings are therefore most relevant to smaller and mid-sized channels rather than giant established creators.

Correlation is not causation

The study does not prove:

  • uploading daily causes faster growth
  • uploading weekly causes higher quality
  • more uploads cause more breakouts
  • fewer uploads improve breakout efficiency
  • YouTube rewards a specific publishing frequency

It describes the recent upload behavior of breakout channels and the relationships observed inside that sample.

Final Verdict

How often should you post on YouTube?

For long-form creators, the strongest practical benchmark from this study is:

around 1 to 2 videos per week.

Among 57 long-form-first breakout channels:

  • median cadence was 7 uploads per 30 days
  • roughly 1.6 videos per week
  • 59.6% published eight times per month or less
  • only 14.0% published 30+ times

For Shorts-first channels, the answer was completely different.

Among 105 Shorts-first breakout channels:

  • median cadence was 23 uploads per month
  • roughly 5.4 per week
  • 72.4% published at least 16 times per month
  • 31.4% published at least 30 times

Higher-frequency channels also had more total recent breakout hits.

But the gains were not proportional enough to justify a simple:

more uploads = better

rule.

The better conclusion is:

More publishing gives you more shots on goal, but only while the quality of those shots remains competitive.

For long-form:

start around:

1 to 2 strong uploads per week

unless your production system gives you evidence that more is sustainable.

For Shorts:

a:

4 to 7 per week

testing range is much closer to the breakout-channel distribution.

Then stop listening to generic cadence rules.

Measure your own:

  • topic quality
  • relative views
  • VPH
  • retention
  • CTR
  • production cost
  • total monthly output

Your ideal upload frequency is not the maximum number of videos you can push through a calendar.

It is:

the highest number of strong experiments you can consistently put in front of the right audience.
